Small is Beautiful Concerts
Sunday 5th October 2014 at 3pm at The Avenue Methodist Church, Sale M33 4PL.
You will once again be able to enjoy the piano playing of Lulu Yang and singing of her husband, Baritone Ian Gifford. In this centenary year there have been many events commemorating the outbreak of the first world war and this is our offering. As well as remembering the pity of war, we would like to reflect on peace, so with this in mind we have drawn together a programme of music by both English and German composers, and also featuring Georg Frederick Handel, the German born composer who lived many years in England. His music of course became greatly loved in this country and remains so to this day.
“Harmonious Relations; The Pity of War – the Beauty of Peace”
Handel – The Harmonious Blacksmith, Purcell - Dido's Lament, Purcell - Sonata in G minor for violin, Roger Quilter - weep you no more sad fountains, Finzi -Fear no more the heat o the sun. Vaughan Williams - silent noon. Gurney - Sleep, Elgar – Chanson de nuit – violin and piano, Schubert – Litany on all souls day.
Handel – Peace crowned with roses (from Susanna), Handel – Violin Sonata in F, Beethoven “An die Hoffnung”, Beethoven – Sonata in A Minor op 23 for violin and piano, Bach/ Gounod Ave Maria – violin and piano, Bach – Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring.
Proceeds from this concert will be donated to the charity Peace Direct, which is involved in conflict resolution initiatives, sending peace workers to many strife torn areas of the world. This is much needed work which we hope to support in a small way while at the same time enjoying the beautiful creative efforts of these composers.
